Lying in a field, William stared at the brisk morning sky. Clouds moved overhead in many shapes and forms; many came to depict lifelike items in the world. In the distance, he could he hear his younger brother playing in the field just below. William sat up to watch him play. He couldn’t help but think of how big Brandon has gotten since the last he saw him. He still runs around in these fields playing as if he had no care in the world but to enjoy the wonders of life at his age.
Seeing that he was being watched, Williams brother came toward the hill until at last he sat beside him. Falling on his back once again, William continued to stare at the clouds. Imitating his brother, Brandon falls on his back as well.
After a few moments, it became apparent the silence annoyed Brandon. Taking a few quick looks around, he finally turned to William.
“Have you ever wondered what it would be like in the city?” Brandon asked with a sniffle from his nose.
Taking a moment to answer, William took a handful of grass and tossed it into the air. Most of the grass had landed in his younger brother’s hair. Laughing as he watched him smack at his hair to remove this latest displeasure.
“I try not to think of it. One day I will have to leave here and I don’t want to miss these fields. Arathi is a beautiful land and days like today will become rare.” William replied, turning his attention back to the sky.
Brandon, finally finished getting the grass out, looked back to his older brother.
“If you do not want to leave, why did you join the army? They will send you out there one day anyway.” Brandon said.
“It is something I must do, dad was in the army before us and he fought in many great battles. I joined because I want to be as good of a leader as he was one day. There are many people that need help and I want to do everything I can to help them. Don’t worry so much, I’ll be home to still pick on you.” William said.
Standing up, Brandon looked around as if hearing something. Then he turned back to William.
“When I’m old enough I’m going to join too. I’ll join and go wherever you go.” Brandon said
Laughing, William looked at his brother “You are far too young to be thinking such things. You need to stay here and help around the house. Besides, I don’t feel like being pestered by you the whole time.” William replied with a smile.
“You just watch, I will join some day and you won’t be here to stop me anyway.” Brandon said as he stuck his tongue out.
Walking back down the hill, Brandon stopped midway and looked around again as if hearing something. Looking back to William he motioned with his hand for him to come.
“Do you want to see something I found? It is really neat.” He said as he continued down the hill.
“I’ll be there in a minute, just need to put my boots back on.” William said as he began putting his boots on.
As he did so, he watched Brandon head for an odd shaped rock. Once finished, William began the walk down the hill. Looking at the rock as he continued, he noticed that it began to change shape. It was then; William suddenly realized he could hear nothing around him. A dark and cold feeling overtook him the closer he got to the stone. Now taking his focus back to Brandon, he saw that he was tapping on the shifting stone playfully. William watched as he turned to face him again, still motioning him to follow. Though he couldn’t hear him, he read the words he spoke:
“Come; look at what I have found”
To his horror, William saw the stone turn from behind his brother. The stone began to take the shape that of an Orc. His walk became a run as he tried to get to Brandon, but every step seemed to only put more distance from him. The stone, now an Orc, towered over Brandon with his rusty fist weapons. William saw that the Orc never once looked at Brandon, but it was staring a cold glare at William. With its blood red eyes staring into his own, William could only watch as it began to attack his younger brother.
“Brandon!!! Run damn you! Run!!!” William screamed as loud as he could. It was useless though, Brandon continued to wave even as the first blow had struck.
“NOOOO!!!” William cried as he fell to his knees. The Orc began to stride over to William. William could only look up and through his tears, he saw the Orc standing over him. The Orc looked down with his blood red eyes as he raised his fist once more. The last thing William saw was total darkness.
