Orwyn left Stormwind Keep looking more than a little depressed. The grueling meeting with the high command of the King's military had lasted the entire afternoon and brought changes Orwyn was neither prepared for, nor comfortable with. The King and the council of nobles were extremely displeased with the recent devastating forays into Stormwind's territory by rogue Horde groups, and were determined that a more effective defense needed to be mounted in the future. At the afternoon meeting, Orwyn was enlightened with the details of the earlier discussion in the King's inner circle. It went something like this:

When the heated conversation turned finally away from blame to solutions, General Jonathan, High Commander of Stormwind's Defence, had immediately voiced his opinion that the military was ill-suited to being spread across the entire kingdom defending villages and bridges and such, and was already too heavily involved in certain hot spots around the continent opposing Horde aggression. Heads nodded in agreement. The military was too valuable to waste on static defense of points inside the kingdom and against mercenary rabble. Then someone (Orwyn was bound and determined to learn who) ventured, "well, what about the Stormwind Watch?" The suggestion was greeted warmly, with many compliments directed towards its initiator. It was so obvious. The Watch was already tasked with ensuring law and order. It made all the sense in the world to tack on a few more duties that could easily be absorbed.

That was the story at least. Orwyn's later objections due to the lack of personnel and budget were brushed aside. More people, and funds would of course would be forthcoming (specifics to be determined later). In addition, due to the recent unpleasantness with Twilight Cultists infiltrating the higher ranks of the military, Orwyn was in position to take full responsibility of the Watch's new expanded obligations himself. For that, Orwyn would be given the honor of a promotion to Lt. Commander! Wouldn't that be nice for him! The funds for a corresponding pay increase weren't yet available, but perhaps next year. Still, the title alone was worth its weight in gold, they said!

Right. Orwyn looked at the setting sun and sighed. He briefly wondered if the eventual promised increase in pay would allow him to afford to take up heavy drinking again. Putting the thought aside with a shake of his head, he started back down the steps. The men and officers of the Watch needed to be assembled to hear the news. There was an awful lot of work to do...

CITIZENS OF STORMWIND


With the destruction of Deathwing and the immediate threat to the existence of Azeroth removed, our good King Wrynn has turned his attention to the internal security of the realm and rebuilding its shaken public institutions. As a result, an expansion of the Stormwind City Watch is hereby announced!

Although the enforcement of law and order within the realm will remain a prime focus, the Watch will also take on additional safety and security duties throughout the Kingdom of Stormwind. This will include, but will not be limited to, patrolling roads and protecting trade routes; eliminating bandit groups, wild animals, and dangerous creatures threatening towns and farms; preventing and responding to attacks from rogue members of the Horde; constructing fortifications and other government buildings; and intelligence-gathering to facilitate the success of the other mentioned activities. The Watch has also been directed to more closely oversee operations of the Stormwind Home for the Mentally Interesting, the kingdom's sole facility for the treatment of mental illness.

To undertake these new duties, a dramatic expansion of Watch personnel is required! The Watch has been directed to offer substantial benefits to attract skilled and able-bodied men and women of good character to fill its ranks.

Mounted police
Arms and armorsmiths
Architects and workmen
Asylum technicians

Greetings! My sources have informed me that you're in the process of recruiting. Whilst obviously my duties to both the Horde and the Kirin Tor makes any application I would offer to your order a tad, well, unlikely, that doesn't rule out my ability to help.

You see, I've been afflicted by a terrible disease as of late, one that is a dreadful thing for anyone - let alone a mage, of all people - to suffer: chronic boredom. Yes, yes, how dreadful, I know. Not to worry, however! You see, I have a very lovely hobby I like to participate in that quite often alleviates the symptoms, and as such keeps me from boredly skirmishing with varying Alliance forces: meddling!

You see, you're in need of detectives, and I quite enjoy investigating and getting myself involved in other people's business. Yes, yes, that whole "not accepting Horde recruits due to being racist prats thing," I know. But, not to worry! I am, after all, Kirin Tor by birth, and do like to consider myself an Archmagus of their ranks, which should speak well to my trustworthiness in regards to not murdering your colleagues whilst working together to find some poor missing girl or the like. You won't even have to hire me, of course - I can work quite well as merely a consultant, without even need for pay - the curing of my suffering is all I need. I dare say, you'll find few more qualified for the job.

In the depths of the keep, the usually-heated conversation from the meeting about the Watch carried far enough that Narnicka, at his desk, could hear...

He'd already set his quill down on his desk, listening intently to the going-ons with a small amount of depression. I didn't want you to be in this situation, Orwyn. Hopefully it turns out to be a blessing, rather than drive you nuts, he silently thought to himself.

Narnicka slid off a paper from his desk, authorizing arms and equipment to be shipped to the Watch, at least until they had the smiths to be self-sufficient in that sort of things. Orwyn had been expecting this days ago, but between all the madness about the Presidium being hit, and his stubborn refusal to be the one to drop this news in Orwyn's lap, Narnicka had entirely forgotten. A stifled sigh was audible in the empty chambers as he sat back, listening.

Welcome to the Commanders, Inspector. I'm sure it'll be a ride for you.

Orwyn read the note from Archmagus Zharikov for the third time. Orwyn had already received a large volume of strange requests since the public announcement yesterday, but this one was at the top of the list. He was also certain it was a bad sign that the letter had even been able to appear on his desk to begin with. Obviously, the city's internal security needed serious help. Still, it could never be said that the Watch was above striking deals that, while seemingly questionable on the surface, paid off in the long run...

Orwyn sat down and began to write a response. If the AAMS was as good as their reputation, they'd find a way to deliver a response to this Zharikov fellow somehow.



Archmagus Zharikov:

Greetings sir, and my compliments on your public-spiritedness. I desire for you to understand, firstly, that the Watch bears the Horde in general no ill-will, and is merely concerned with certain underhanded activities recently conducted by certain rogue Horde criminal organizations. Therefore the submission of your services is noted with the caution directed to any person volunteering in such a manner, but also is as equally welcomed.

In this day and age, as demonstrated by said criminal assaults, crime knows no legal or cultural boundaries, and imperils members of all races equally. Any individual in a position to provide assistance where the unfortunate nature of current politics limits our effectiveness would be a valuable asset to the universally shared cause of justice.

Therefore I would entertain further correspondence with you to discuss details of your service, if a more secure means of communication can be agreed upon and arranged.

Orwyn signed the letter with his usual neat script, then tightly sealed the envelope. He held it at eye level and studied it thoughtfully for a moment, before reaching for his communicator.

"Officer Condrave, I would like to see you in my office. I have a new person of interest for you..."

Charitye had tried scratching on Imperon's door again, only to be dropped, yet again, into the laundry tub in the basement. The laundry woman screamed at her and flailed at the cat with a wet shirt while Charitye yowled in protest. It was time to go somewhere quiet. She slipped away from the tower and returned to Stormwind.

Where was her friend Chambliss? It was quiet in his office. And there were stacks of papers to dry her fur on.

She peered around the corner. No one was in the office. She'd wait. She padded up the stairs and hopped up on the desk, rolling around in the papers. She'd be dry in no time.

She laid her head down and went to sleep.

What was that yelling?

How rude.

Chambliss started as a furry shape darted across his peripheral vision. He whirled around to point a shaky arm at the creature. With a deep sigh of relief, he saw it was only a giant rat. Nervously fingering the hilt of his sword, he looked warily around the alleyway. The last week had taken a toll on his nerves. He knew he was being followed; watched. Here and there he'd catch fleeting glimpses of the cat. Never for more than a second. Always close. Watching.

He quickly checked his boots for damage. It was becoming an involuntary habit. Still ok. She was close though. She was always close...

Then there was the incident in Orwyn's office with the papers. Chambliss had only gone to the latrine for a couple of minutes. What else was he supposed to do? It wasn't his fault, but he had been the duty officer that night, so it still ended up being his responsibility that the files had been ruined. He had no idea how she had gotten in. He'd taken to locking his boots in his footlocker every night. He warned the other officers to do the same, but they thought he was crazy. As the armorer, it was his responsibility to make sure everyone's boots were repaired if damaged. The mental burden was becoming more than he could bear.

A cloud passed over the moon, cloaking the entire alley in shadows. Chambliss became even more aware just how many hiding places there were in the alley - in the entire city. He glanced down at his boots again.

Never had he felt more vulnerable, or.....alone.

Tayrunas dozed off as ink spilt all over the paper. Only when she saw a large blob of black through her burgundy eyelashes did she jolt awake. The page was already ruined-- She'd have to start over again.

She sighed as she put the pen down, got up, and stretched. Her room was the now-usual disaster-- books piled on top of each other, some open, some closed, many with notes stuck between the pages, her unmade bed, open drawers, and overflowing laundry hamper. She look around. She'd been a little lazy and forgetful before, but now it was much worse. Apperantly, several weeks without your soul took it's toll on your life. She'd even fell asleep on Goldenwing-- And the poor gryphon had to wake the red-headed girl up by swooping into the canals.

She looked at the piles of paper. There were about twenty different letters, all the same request, just in different words-- and they either didn't sound right, or they were ruined in some way, shape or form. Either she'd spilt water, ink, or some potion Ressa made for her on them, or fell asleep and started drooling on them, or she'd lost it and started crying. She frowned and pushed blood-red hair out of her face. She looked at the ground and closed her eyes. She was losing it again.

I can't be apart of that. I'm unsuited for it. Some detective I am, and I fell for the simplest of traps!

Goldenwing shifted uncomfortably as he heard Tayrunas weep. It was hard to listen to-- She sounded so sad.

He put his head down and went to sleep, with comfort that Tayrune was worth something. She just couldn't convince herself of that.

Columns of light and dark grey smoke rose lazily into the calm midafternoon air. Orwyn paused a moment in his writing to appreciate the pleasant color contrast between the smoke and the bright red rocks of the far northern Redridge valley. As a rule large pillars of smoke in Stormwind's territory equaled big trouble, but for once they were a welcome sight - markers of a successful operation. In the seemingly endless procession of troubles for the kingdom, any successes were rare things to be greatly appreciated.

Seated in relative comfort on a rock crowning a small knoll located in the pass between Redridge and the Burning Steppes, Orwyn returned to putting the final touches on his report. The Watch had been directed over a month ago to see to improving the security of all the roads into Stormwind's territory to guard against large-scale invasions. The pass Orwyn was now sitting in had been given the highest priority, due to the presence of Blackrock Orcs in the Steppes, only a short journey from Lakeshire. A survey party a few weeks ago identified an immediate problem that had to be corrected before anything else however: the area was already crawling with orcs.

Fortunately it was a relatively simple problem with a relatively simple answer. The prior evening, a joint force from the Watch and the First Stormwind Regiment swept up the valley west of the pass where a large camp of orcs posed the most immediate threat. The orcs stood little chance against the well-organized and equipped force. Every orc encountered was killed, and their entire encampment put to the torch. Orwyn shaded his eyes to better see further up the valley where a work detail was gathering and burning the orc corpses. He was definitely happy to be far enough away to avoid the smell.

Yes, it had been an unqualified success. The only thing that troubled him, was the discovery of a forest troll in the furthest recesses of a cave in the valley. The troll had apparently been involved in some strange ritual at the time of his discovery. He had been killed, of course, but a search of the immediate area turned up a locked chest. The chest was later opened and its contents discovered to be a gruesome mix of decomposing remains in one compartment, and three pages each of orcish, troll, and gutterspeak writing. Translation of the documents revealed that all, frustratingly, had been written in code.

Orwyn mulled it over one more time. Orcish made sense. Troll made sense. Gutterspeak...that was disturbing. Well, hopefully the code would be broken soon and the mystery cleared up. Regardless, Orwyn was confident that he would have plenty of other problems to keep him occupied until then.
