How to roleplay a Night Elf.

Well, I did say some was speculation. And Blizzard openly said that the Kaldorei were based on the Japanese.

I do not remember Blizzard ever stating that the Night Elves are based on Japanese culture. In fact, I'd venture to say the samurai look of the Pandaren is based more on Japanese culture while the Night Elves are clearly, and I mean clearly, based on Korean culture.

Kimchi - Korean Dish.
Hanbok/Dangui - Traditional Korean clothing.

I could go further into this if you'd like and you might want to update your guide to reflect this revelation.

Edit: Just going to toss in that the Metzen said the building structure was a combination of Japanese and Nordic architect.

Pandaren are based off of chinese now, because Pandas are the national symbol of China and somebody complained that the Chinese symbol using Japanese icons was disrespectful.

That is not enitely true. Pandaren's aren't in the game because it sends a mixed message to the Chinese when Blizzard uses their national symbol in conjunction with Japanese samurai.

Edit: The Blood Elves on the other hand and their sense of nationalism seems to be heavily influenced by Chinese government and culture.

This, is a wonderful thread and you are an amazing poster. May it ever be stickied.

I honestly thought you were a troll when I looked at your avatar the first time. Voodoo mask, long ears, very light blue/purple skin... All of the signs were there.

Thank you, I try.

Those were examples I made up in my head, you get that, right? I don't actually expect it to happen or said it does.

If you don't expect it to happen why list it as an example?

It's an example however exaggerated. My limite for stupidity is being filled quickly today.

Everyone has a stupidity quota. Some just have a larger one than others.

No, I'm not directing the latter comment at you. >_>

It's important to notice that just because a character is part of a particular race does not mean they subscribe to a common ideology. For example, not all orc characters must resent the forsaken. I get bored fast when I see every single night elf character running around swearing by Elune and the moonlight and fawning over nature. Especially considering the massive fragmentation of Night Elf society after all of their major cities were destroyed, and the fact that their culture was much different (accepting magic) before this happened, I think it's just fine for a Night Elf character to act differently. However, playing your Night Elf like a human is still ridiculous, because even the new Night Elves have been around longer than humans have.

Who else should they swear by?

This was ten thousand or so years ago. Night elves were secluded for millenia under a dictator. They've had no new culture for that whole time so it'd be pretty ingrained.

The fact that there was fragmentation shows how intolerant night elves are of something different or dangerous. They expelled the magic users and thier culture has been almost unchanged since that point.

It's not so much that we look down on night elves that are "out of the norm," it's that an overwhelming majority of them are. Hence the "Purple Human menace."

However, playing your Night Elf like a human is still ridiculous, because even the new Night Elves have been around longer than humans have.

I like you.

I guess after having done a quest in Desolace if you're gonna roleplay a Night Elf correctly then now you have to....

Offer the flesh of your enemies to Elune! Let the rivers flow with their blood!!!!!!!
