((I am doing this transpose a little bit different and leaving the rolls in. Sometimes it's fun to see how rolls determine how you respond to events real time. Probably some errors in the tenses too, I will edit as I find them ))

Trenetir sat perusing the bills of lading that came in. He carefully surveyed each one, ensuring that each of his shipments was received. Where there was an error he set the parchment aside, making a careful notation in his ledger. Trenetir was nothing if not thorough.

Yuuko walked quietly in from the curtains, leaned against some crates and nodded at Trenetir.

Trenetir sat down his quill and looked to Yuuko, leaning back in his seat, 'What news do you bring?" he turned to look at her asking, "Poisoned and dying? Poisoned and dead? .... or simply... Poisoned..."

A perturbed looked crossed Yuuko’s face as she answered "Poisoned, but somehow still alive and walking"

Trenetir stood angry at this news, "So you have failed... Twice."

Yuuko narrowed her eyes at Trenetir and retorted "The target is resilient, maybe this is not meant to be"

Trenetir inhaled and exhaled slowly, "Not. Meant. To. Be."

Yuuko raised a brow staring back "Correct. That is what I said I believe. I have not encountered one so able to survive. She cheats death as if a hand from above is watching over her. Nay I am no longer comfortable with her destruction by my hand. Perhaps there is another way to ruin her?

Trenetir looked down at his ledgers then raised his gaze slowly to her. His eyes flashed bright white, "What I am hearing is that my housekeeper is unable and unwilling to take out the trash.. not once...but twice. Fail me once shame on you, fail me twice....” he glared at her.

Yuuko locked her gaze on him glaring back and walked to the table

Trenetir spoke “You have not been in my service for long but let us consider the possibilities. Tell me Yuuko, do you see anyone in my employ that appears to be a failure?”

Yuuko turned her head slowly to Trenetir "My actions were not ones of failure. You know damn well she should not have survived. And as for your question, no"

Trenetir stepped closer to her, "Tell me, do you refuse the task to finish the job?"

Yuuko almost spat as she glares back "I choose my life." she exhaled sharply "If I attempt another attack now, it would be foolish and unwise!", she removed her dagger from her sheath and tossed it on the desk “You want her dead? Do it yourself!”

Trenetir withdrew the dagger from his desk, looking almost forlornly at the notch in the well treated wood as his wrist flicked, letting the dagger fly with expertise, seeking to impale itself in the forearm of her sword hand. The volcano within flashed within his eyes, which burned like the embers of coals. His hand immediately went to his sword and drew it, his shield at the ready. This was a man poised not to maim, but to kill.

Yuuko gasped in shock; she clutched her arm and looked at the dagger, its blade firmly buried in her arm. She took a few steps backwards and exclaimed “What the fel has gotten into you!” her stance changed to one of defense. She winced as she removed the dagger.

All semblance of calm is gone, all composure has been thrown out the window as Trenetir stood up to his full height, towering over her as he lunged at her, sword first. "You have failed me. Tell me Yuuko, do I strike you as a man who tolerates failure?"

Yuuko parried to her right, keeping a sharp eye at Trenetir "You are not being reasonable. You attacking me is a folly you shall soon regret”

Trenetir grinned wickedly and spun on the spot, his left hand extending the shield towards her as a destraction, so that when he had completed his turn he would seek to impale her upon his well honed blade as his turn came to a stop.

((First roll shield slam))
Trenetir rolls 94 (1-100)
Yuuko rolls 4 (1-100)

((Second roll sword thrust))
Trenetir rolls 19 (1-100)
Yuuko rolls 99 (1-100)

Yuuko is dazed by shield slamming into her, so much so that she stumbles backwards, avoiding a jab that comes within only a few hairs of her stomach. She whirled around snarling and took a few more steps backwards “You are a mess!”

Trenetir growled low as his blade misses the mark. He advanced on her, the shield crashing to the ground with a loud clamor, his left hand extending at her in an attempt to shock her with the Light from within. "You are a failure."

Trenetir rolls 39 (1-100)
Yuuko rolls 81 (1-100)

Yuuko glares angrily shaking the Light away and attempted to pummel Trenetir with the hilt of her dagger

Yuuko rolls 14 (1-100)
Trenetir rolls 64 (1-100)

Trenetir blocked the hiltr and advances on her still, raising his left hand to punch her jaw

Trenetir rolls 37 (1-100)
Yuuko rolls 66 (1-100)

Yuuko ducked the punch and exclaimed "Look at you! You are sloppy with rage!" flips the dagger so its blade first and thrusts forward

Yuuko rolls 9 (1-100)
Trenetir rolls 94 (1-100)

Trenetir raised his arm and turned his wrist to block the dagger, it sounded with a loud CLING against his blade as he pressed against her further, "You have failed me."

Yuuko spun and attempted to knee him in the groin

Yuuko rolls 68 (1-100)
Trenetir rolls 63 (1-100)

Trenetir buckled over, unable to block the knee in time, "Wench, you have signed your death warrant." It wasn't the pain, it was the fact that she tried.

Yuuko pushed away from Trenetir and stumbled backwards slowly heading for the exit with her hand tightly clutching her right arm

Trenetir stood slowly as she backed away. He took a risk, and threw his blade end over end seeking to impale her upon it once more.

Trenetir rolls 85 (1-100)
Yuuko rolls 62 (1-100)

Yuuko turned but before her foot could make it to the first step, she doubled over. The sword entered through her back, its tip exiting the left side of her chest, piecing a lung along its path. She fell face first before the steps, breathing shallowly

Trenetir advanced on her and reaching for his blade, his father's blade. He drew it slowly from her body, "You mocked my authority. You doubted. You have been found wanting.... If by some miracle you manage to live... you are fired."

Trenetir moved to kneel down next to her. "Until today you have served dutifully, admit your failure and I will call for a healer. Ask for forgiveness and you will know life."

Yuuko looked up at Trenetir her eyes flickering "Your hands are dirtier then what I can ever clean. Your house is.. ..” she couldn’t finish her sentence as she lost consciousness.

Dellis hesitated. He wasn't a man prone to hesitation but in this singular moment he recalled the fate of Merri, his predecessor. Dead without a second thought. He looked down at the note in his hand, taken from the fallen body of Yuuko. The body that had been removed before he could take care of it.

She lives. She lives, and I must be the one to tell him. Dellis was the devoted type, who, some would even say followed Trenetir blindly. But there was something in the air that day as he went to take care of his fallen fellow employee. It was obvious that she had earned the ire of their master. Dellis blinked several times, trying, without any luck to erase that bloody scene from his memory.

She lives. Their..no...his master will just have to deal with that. This offense was not enough for Trenetir to end Dellis' life as he had ended Merri's. Dellis stilled himself, the blinks fading as he focused on the parchment in his hand, found on Yuuko's body, taken before she was rescued from the office.

The Royal Bank of Silvermoon City

Redeemable for Two Hundred Fifty Gold Coins

"Hope to hear from you soon." Koudo Belore'alah.

Dellis knew the implications. He feared more for bringing the note than he did for telling him that she lives.

As he raised his hand to knock on the door of the private office he slipped the note into his pocket, telling himself, Irilin will be the level headed one.

"Enter" Came the familiar voice.

He had a fondness for the Shieldbearer and for the first time since taking up service in the household of Moradinel now Duskwhisper, Dellis entered the office with the intent to lie to his master.

The formal office was just that: formal, to the point of being overbearing. Large bookcases filled with ledgers, treatises on both trade and manufacturing loomed ominously on the far wall, nearly blocking out any light which threatens to come in through the window. The room itself is dimly lit with simple candles.

Keep things simple. "I found nothing of import on her." The lie came out first like an arrow from a sloppy archer, bouncing off the walls of the castle it sought to siege.

((Deception/Bluff roll:
Dellis: 66
Trenetir: 99 ))

Trenetir surveyed Dellis, narrowing his gaze, "And?" He pressed, seeing the secretary look around the room awkwardly.

Dellis tried to look through Trenetir instead of at him as he spoke, "She lives."

Trenetir clenched his teeth at this news, standing abruptly and moving to stand before Dellis. He was a fair inch or two taller than the messenger, but it was not his height which caused him to appear to be so demeaning, it was the fact that the image of the bloody office still flashed before Dellis' vision.

"And?" He pressed, Larcentius was hiding something.

Dellis' face fell as he fished the note from his pocket and handed it to Trenetir who read and re-read the note, the weight of it sucking the breath from his chest.

The silence that followed threatened to choke Dellis as he stood anxiously awaiting directions from his master. The gaze that settled on the messenger was not one of understanding, nor one of pity, it was one of sheer disgust and disappointment.

"You." The single word was like ice cutting through the heart of Dellis.

He gulped and nodded, words failing him before he eventually stammered, "Y..yes.. me.."

Betrayed. Twice in as many days.

"Leave." The command came instead of the sword, for now at least.

Without hesitation Dellis left the office, his silent steps leading far away from the center of it all. He left the estate and kept walking. Vaguely he remembered placing a hand upon the Translocution Orb. He walked for days always looking forward, never looking back until finally he collapsed on the road near the Alterac Mountains.

The sun was just now starting to set, its lazy rays causing the beaten path to glow a golden brown. The wind coming off the mountains was cool and welcome; Noikona’s bangs flittered slightly in the shallow breeze. She wore a heavy cloak concealing her armor, but it did nothing to hide her sword and shield. Traveling these areas required a show of force. The bandits here were much less likely to attack a threatening foe, then someone unarmed. She wanted to get to the town before sundown, the town in which Tremia had been taken so many months ago. It was important to see that there was no more activity. The Blades had all but burnt the cell to the ground, but the Syndicate was notorious for always coming back.

She rounded a familiar bend and her eyes narrowed, not more than fifty paces away lay what appeared to be a man. He wasn’t dressed for the elements and lay on his stomach. Noikona laughed to herself as she approached the fool. A bit of confusion crossed her face as she approached. His clothes were quite elegant and he still had his boots, not at all what she expected. She had figured he was the folly of a bandit attack, but being clothed erased that from her mind. She quickened her pace and stopped. Ears.

Kneeling down her hands expertly scoured his body for valuables. Her eyes darted left and right before roughly turning him over. She gasped as recognition slammed into her mind. She knew the man. Not his name, but she had seen him many times before. He had been known to frequent the Spire, conversing with many of the Consortium. There was a slight groan from him, he lived.

Anger filled her as she stood and looked around. She wanted desperately to just walk away. The battle within her raged. Her eyes lowed back to the sin'dorei, as a shrewd look crossed her face. She bent down, cradling the man in her arms. The weight of her armor did nothing to help; he wasn’t a small man. She lumbered forward to a clearing several hundred paces away from the road and began setting up camp. She would nurse him back to health and see just what she could glean from him. If she found nothing useful? Well she would at least let him dig his own grave.

((several days later))

Yuuko quaffed the potion, cringing as the foul taste lingered in her mouth. She tossed the empty vial in the waste as she continued to the alley beyond. She stopped half way down the dark passageway wheezing some. Her chest ached and her body shook. She waited many heartbeats, until the effects of the potion finally started to work its magic. She knew she couldn’t continue to live this way. She couldn’t always be dependent on potions and elixirs to keep her upright. The healers were still amazed that she had come this far. The blade had done so much damage; there are just some things that can’t be healed.

Shaking her head to clear her mind she continued on ahead. The voice came from her left which she quickly turned to. “Ma’am?” the voice came low.

Yuuko’s eyes narrowed and a slim smile crested her lips “Early as usual I see”

Fellchar smiled his golden tooth glistened in the waning light “Of course, your gold is good. I would never pass up faithful employer”

Yuuko nodded, opening a bag she had lowered to her feet. The bag was quite large. She slowly pulled out an elegantly crafted shield. A shield she had stolen from Miss Belore’alah’s home. The AAMS emblem was finely painted over its broad surface. She looked at it before sighing and handing it over to Fellchar, she spoke softly “I want you to kill a man. It should be easy enough. He is a poet and a playwright. You will find his whereabouts in a letter that should already be in your mailbox. The only thing I ask you to do, is to leave this shield at the crime.” She tossed him a bag of gold “That’s three hundred in travel gems. Do this flawlessly and you will get the remaining three hundred plus a two hundred bonus.”

Fellchar smiled wider “Not a fan of the arts are we?”

Yuuko’s face darkened “Aren’t we all in a play of some sort? Right now the stage light is pointed at me. It is time it’s directed towards someone else. And make sure that letter is left at the scene. It should make things more interesting”

Fellchar nodded his head, taking the shield and began to leave “Consider it done Yuuko, consider it done”

Perhaps it was because people think writers are weak.
Perhaps it was because people assume that when one sense goes, so do the rest.
Perhaps it was because people just don't know him as well as they think they do.

Whatever the reason, the lifeless body of an unnamed assassin now laid slumped in a cell in the dungeon. Though he was sure the body would eventually start to smell, he had to put it somewhere, for the time being, out of Trenetir's immediate attention. The last thing he needed was for Trenetir to know that someone had tried to kill him.

Irilin had heard the intruder long before the subtle whisper of the carefully opened door. Disappearing from sight, he waited, and struck quietly at him, incapacitating him for a moment. That he had recovered so quickly and begun striking out at Irilin was a testament to his ability, but in the end, a few well-placed strikes had taken down the man

Despite a long time looking at the shield, he could discern nothing beyond its shape through his limited vision. He ran his fingers carefully over the surface, searching with his touch for something that would explain why an assassin would be carrying something so large. The painting on the shield's surface was well-done--he could only feel the occasional ridge from the edges of the painted area, but it wasn't enough to give him a clear picture of what was painted there.

Irilin frowned slightly, wishing that Dellis were nearby. With his departure, there was no one besides Trenetir to talk to, and Irilin didn't want to bring this to his attention. He brought the shield to his writing room, and slid it carefully behind a bookshelf where no one would see it. It appeared that, unless Dellis made a miraculous return to the estate, Irilin would have to seek out someone willing to help him.

Telirra blinked at Irilin as he approached her at Hardwrench Hideaway. Since they were both early, he knew he would have a couple moments to talk to her in private before anyone else arrived. He nodded to her, then wrote a quick note, which he handed to her.

Do you have a moment?

Telirra took the note and nodded, before mentally kicking herself. “Yes,” she says, sliding off the barrel where she had been seated. Irilin wrote out a slightly longer note, and handed it to her.

I was wondering if you would be able to look at something for me.

Telirra read the note quickly with a small frown, "I can. What was it?” Irilin produced a decently-sized shield, bearing the mark of the AAMS, and handed it to Telirra. She took the shield silently and held it, fully aware of what it was. "Where did you get this?" she asked.

Irilin wrote another note, handing it to Telirra.

From the body of the assassin who tried to kill me a few days ago.

Telirra's nostrils flared. "Are you trying to tell me that Koudo tried to kill you?" Irilin raised a surprised eyebrow. He wrote quickly, handing the note to Telirra.

Koudo? It was a man who tried to kill me...why would you think it would be Koudo?

“This shield belongs to her,” said Telirra. “I would know it anywhere...” Irilin furrowed his brown in thought, and Telirra continued. “Would you be able to …describe or draw what the assassin looked like?” Irilin shook his head, writing another note and handing it too her.

[i[All I know is that whoever it was is dead now. And that he was carrying that shield.[/i]

Irilin frowned, partly in frustration, partly in disappointment in himself. Telirra gripped the shield tighter and nods, "Are you okay?" Irilin took a deep breath, almost a sigh, and nodded. Telirra took a moment to study him and make sure he looked okay. "Thank you for bringing me this...I appreciate it Irilin. Are you staying for lounge?"

Irilin wrote a note and handed it to Telirra.

Perhaps for a short while. Also, I haven't told Trenetir about this, and I would prefer he didn't know.

Telirra snorted. "Like I would ever talk to that—um, right...I promise I won't say anything.” Irilin smiled slightly, writing out another note to hand to Telirra.

If you could find out who could have obtained that shield, I'd appreciate it. I'd prefer to prevent any further attempts on my life, if possible.

Telirra scanned the note and nodded again, "I will." Irilin nodded in thanks, smiling. “If you come across any more information you should tell me, it will help my investigation. Now, if you'll excuse me, I need to make sure my Shield Bearer is alright...

Irilin nodded, slipping away to a corner to wait for people to arrive. Telirra watched him for a moment before pulling out her stone and muttering into it.

Dellis walked through the estate carefully. Careful to avoid the office of Trenetir, careful to tend to Master Irilin whenever he was able to. The unexpected visitor in the dungeons had made him regret leaving his post.

Trenetir had not killed him and for this he was grateful, the Draenei woman who found him seemed to think that he would die from the elements but her kindness.... her kindness allowed him to make it back to the city, eventually.

I should have never left. He chastised himself. With Yuuko gone, who was left to clean up the messes? No one but Dellis.

It wasn't his first dead body, far from it, and as he dealt with it, the image of Yuuko's bloody body seemed to become lesser in his mind's eye, something that let him get on with things.

Don't ask questions. This had been one of the first things that Trenetir had told him when he was hired. Dellis had seen first hand his master's cruelty. But as he could be cruel he could be kind, few saw this and he knew it. Irilin saw it. Sometimes Dellis thought that the pair of them were the only ones capable of seeing it, maybe because no one wanted to see Trenetir change, or because everyone wanted to see him fail.

Nonetheless, the other servants of the Duskwhisper household were in a flurry, preparing for Master Irilin's play. Dellis was a loyal man, or so he kept telling himself. Was attempting to protect Koudo, a woman he hardly knew, worth his life? This question turned itself over and over again in his mind as he attempted to return to work, the answer that came back was always the same, and it caused his stomach to turn to knots. No.

He felt shame, for the first time since taking up his post, not for what he did, but for he now wondered what he was capable of. Was this changing him? Is that why Yuuko's life was forfeit? Because she too started to cross the line, or worse yet... had.

What a fortuitous encounter! The petite elf smiled slyly to herself as she left the Silvermoon City Inn. For the second time in less than a week she had found herself being offered drinks by the same gentlemen. He had been all politeness, and yet his manner indicated he had something to hide.

Intriguing.

Even more exciting, he had also told her of a possible new client. One of his masters, Irilin, was putting on a play and may have need of her services. Her dusky eyes shimmered with excitement at the thought of new buyer for her merchandise. Or perhaps this Irilin would be wanting to put something on consignment instead. No matter. New money flowing through her coffers would be an excellent way to start the summer. Her shrewd mind churned with the possibilities.

As she rounded a corner, delicately stepping around a bench full of people, she considered the thought that perhaps it would be in her best interest to find out more about Dellis and his masters. Interestingly, he seemed to know her friend, Koudo. That little tidbit of attention-grabbing information had come out when another young woman, whom Dellis had referred to as Yuuko came into the inn. Apparently, this other woman felt Dellis owed her money. That part of the conversation had caused great discomfort for the male elf.

Doubly intriguing.

As she entered her shop, eyeing the latest pile of art that had been delivered, she made a mental note to make a lunch date with Koudo. Perchance some light could be shed on this Dellis, his masters and Yuuko.

Yuuko waited as the healer paced. She was already in a foul mood from her encounter with Dellis and his date. She didn't know if he was responsible for going through her things while she was unconscious, but she doubted it was Trenetir. That bank note from Koudo was still her money. She would get it back somehow. Her attention went back to the healer as he approached.

The healer shook his head as he spoke, “I am sorry there isn't much more I can do”

Yuuko stared firmly at the healer “Try harder. I can’t but walk a few hundred paces without becoming exhausted. My sword arm is next to useless. There has to be something more you can do”

“Miss Raradien, let me point out that it’s a miracle that you are even alive. There’re many that live normal lives with just one lung; you will eventually grow accustomed to it, maybe even outperforming some that have two.” The healer approached and gently lifted Yuuko’s sword arm continuing “Your arm, your arm will never be what it once was. We could try some advanced therapy but I am afraid your axe wielding days are over”

A silent gasp escaped the healer as a trickle of blood meandered down his chin from his parted lips. His eyes stared at Yuuko and slowly he looked down to where her left hand still held the hilt of a dagger buried deeply in his stomach

Yuuko stood jerking the dagger up and twisting it hard as she yanked it out. The healer crumpled, dead before he hit the ground. Yuuko donned her clothing letting the patient robe drape over the unmoving doctor. She quietly left the room turning back only briefly speaking “I think I will find a second opinion”

In an unmistakably trained soprano voice, words of a song made their way up from the dark depths of the veiled dungeon.

Light of the well hear my plea, enter me, abound with me and set me free

My existence is marred with gloom and shadow; I can only yearn to be bathed by your radiant embrace

In darkness I was raised, in darkness I’ll be erased, my life is but a single, marred disgrace

The voice cracked and sounded a bit strained, but continued.

The future is yours to light my path; I only need to follow to win this life’s footrace

Light of the well hear my plea, enter me, abound with me and set me free

Light of the well hear my plea, enter me, abound with me and set me free

The voice trailed off until there was once again silence

Drip, the sound came from somewhere in a corner of the room. Yuuko sat huddled in a crook of her cell, furthest away from the door leading up to the world above. She wore a short robe with a towel draped over her legs. Her hair now hung to her shoulders, it’s now natural blond color shining dully in the meager light. From her vantage point she could barely make out the wards, pulsing on the ground, walls and door. She hadn’t seen Trenetir in days, her hope now was that he’d forgotten her. She was thankful that Dellis had brought her bread and water every day, it was just enough to keep her going. It was also nice to see another face from time to time. She chuckled to herself; she had actually tormented Dellis in the past, now she depended on his selfless acts of pity just to stay alive.

Drip, the rhythmic sound came again. Her eyes shifted to a not so old scorch mark on the dungeon floor. The thoughts of that day flipped through her mind. She remembered hearing the explosion and running down into to the dungeon, memories of Trenetir lying unmoving flashed in front of her eyes. She had carried his unconscious and barely breathing body up those steps, most likely saving his life.

She leaned her head against the bars, now this. Stubbornly she looked around and exhaled lightly. She wouldn’t let him break her. She would die before she would submit, after she left her life on the stage she knew nothing but fighting. It was what she was now. She would never give up.

Drip.

The old orc hag stood at the entrance of Lordaeron. Arms folded, leaning against the east wall just inside the main portcullis, she gazed out at the old city banners. Their poles lined the long road leading up to the city steps. Wooden arms at their peak held aloft tattered remnants of the city that was. Of the people that were.

Scowling out from beneath the deep hood, a scowl that seemed permanently affixed, she idly wondered if these standards remained as a symbol of the people's change, or a subtle reminder of who they been. Each purple standard hung lifelessly. The silver marking of Lordaeron barely visible on most.

The hag lowered her brow slightly, fixing her gaze upon something else in the distance. The sigil of the once great city still incited a deep burning hatred. Her ears twitched at a faint sound. On reflex her neck and shoulders flexed as if ready to defend herself. She relaxed on when she remembered where she was standing.

Soft padding with an occasion shuffle. A dry, almost hoarse, voice spoke from behind.

"Gar'mak." the decidedly feminine voice greeted. The hag remained as she was, leaning against the east wall of the corridor.

"Banshee." The hag growled in return. The gaunt frame of a woman stepped to her side.

She stood with a slight slouch, a trait common among her kind. Robes long, white, hemmed and cuffed with black silk denoting her station as a priestess within the Cult of Forgotten Shadows. Her features were fair for her kind, gaunt as they were. Her flesh appeared to be fairly well preserved aside from the obvious lack of color. She bore the mark of the grave, skin blue and pale, ice cold to the touch. Her hair stood nearly straight back with a flair lending her the fearsome visage of her namesake.

"Is everything prepared?" She asked, voice low and dry.

The deep hood of the hag tilted slightly toward the undead woman. Her glare evident, and answer enough.

"Good." She rasped. "Everything is prepared on my end."

The hag's deep hood turned a little more toward the corpse. "She will be... intact... when you are finished?"

"Physically, yes. Mentally..." She rasped a dry chuckle. "Well, we shall see."

The deep hood returned to its dark gaze out at the banners. "As long as she still has her wits. She's useless to me if she's a vegetable." The hag growled.

"If she's not, you will be adequately compensated for your time and effort."

The pair stood in silence for a time. Soon the hag would cross into Silvermoon via their translocator to collect her things.

Yuuko woke not knowing the time, darkness surrounded her, it was frequently like this; the disorientation was becoming nerve wracking. Her dependence on Dellis bringing her meals kept at least some semblance of time in her nonexistent schedule.

She looked down at her hands, the green glow from her eyes silhouetting them against her legs, her fingers trembled as she tried to curl them into a fist. There was a pain in her stomach and her mouth felt unbearably dry. How long had it been since Dellis had last come? She swallowed but it felt more like trying to gulp sand.

She curled her knees up to her chest, listening to the rhythmic dripping in the remoteness, waiting. He would come soon.
