What I have issue with most of the time is the attitude of the "lore police" who insist we are all capable of making totally lore consistent and interesting characters and still have fun. Guess what? The amount of people playing things exactly in that manner are VERY few! Not everyone is capable of being a Tolkien or even a George Lucas and making characters who meet your standards.

You can create incredibly diverse and unique characters without having to hammer in 'unique' ideas like this. The best characters I've ever RPed with have been a standard human rogue, an unremarkable worker at the Darkmoone Faire, and and Night Elven cloth merchant.

These characters didn't have any special powers.

They didn't do anything that you've never seen before.

They had no 'unique' aspects applied with scotch tape and super glue.

They were simply RPed very well, and the people behind the keyboard understood how to properly execute and control a character in an interesting fashion to make the characters truly enjoyable to interract with. Hell, even I RP mostly 'normal' characters.

Desh is simply a warlock who does warlock like things. The only 'catch' is that he's actually fairly gifted with shadow magic and is somewhat autistic.

Hallinton's an ex-soldier gone criminal who sits comfortable upon a rather small criminal empire. There isn't anything remotely 'unique' about him other than his racism; which I feel is nothing unique, but merely something most human RPers are so turned off by due to racism being such scorned in real life.

Larindrian is a Dragon Hunter. He hunts dragons and kills them due to hating them because of the Second War. Nothing unique there.

Delorath, my Demon Hunter, -is- fairly unique in some ways. However despite that he's still largely 'generic' in all other aspects. His 'special snowflake' aspects don't actually make him interesting, it's his generic qualities and exploring them to great depths that do.

This is why I'm so quick to kick the idea to the floor and shoot it execution-style in the head. Because it's contrived, overly complex, and being executed by someone who, as I've already said, should be spending their time laying claim to the basics of RP and writing.Furthermore I recommend that nearly -everyone- uses 'non unique' characters because they're far less complex.

Even if you do have a solid grasp of RP and writing basics, it's really not hard to make a character so needlessly complex that you'll either drown in the details or simply execute it horribly

Nailing on odds and ends, over powering a character, ect ect do not make them fun or interesting. They make them boring and trite.

I agree with you there Hallinton, I have no issue with you and how you rp your characters. I like the fairly normal characters and see more diversity in playing someone who is far from perfect.

I also want to stress that I am not playing Vira to be normal in any way. She is crazy, she misinterprets things frequently, she has a volatile temper. She loves to tamper where she should not go and I fully intend on her ending in a spectacular way. As it should be. I find it entertaining to play a character like this and have her hunted and thwarted at every turn.

I have a few other characters who are pretty normal for the setting. Mostly blood elves and a few Night elves. Some humans and even a worgen or two.

As for Blizzard forcing people to comply? They won't do anything about it because it is in their best interests from a business perspective to make the game as fun and open as they can so they can attract and keep subscribers.

In addition to this, Blizzard doesn't take itself nearly as serious as some of its RPers do. I mean, despite being an obvious joke, Haris Pilton is for all intents and purposes a lore character. And Uldum? Spielberg should be getting royalties for that zone. And how about that quest in Hillsbrad that entirely shatters the fourth wall and lets you play a quest giver? All of these things were placed in the game by the people who created it, and can be found on every single realm. These are things that will be seen by likely every single player.

An idea such as yours is much smaller in scale. In fact, outside of the people who are RPing with you, it will have ZERO affect. I'm not going to log in tomorrow and see a newly opened portal by Viragona. Not even if I were on the same server would I see it. It has absolutely no affect whatsoever on the actual gaming world. Whether it strictly adheres to lore or not is inconsequential in the grand scheme of things.

Thanks all for your help, I will be changing a few things in this, I need to make it a bit more plausible. And yes I do not intend her to succeed.

I wanted to tell you all that I am having a lot of fun rping this character. I also have had several state they do not want me to kill her off. I suppose I could have it as her demon bond is messing with her mind and possibly she can recover her own mind and be a little less crazy.

Not sure yet, but it is fun to play a slightly insane and volatile character.

Just for the record, and without getting involved in the argument...

That libram you picked up used to be used for vanilla head enchants. Or was it shoulder enchants? There was a mage (a blood mage I think) in the Blasted Lands that used their power to make the enchant for you, once you grabbed some materials for him.

You may or may not give two damns, but just throwing it out there.

As for insane characters...depends on what kind of insanity you have going. Seyl's insane, but it's not apparent to anyone that didn't know her before she nearly went over the edge on fel magic consumption. Blatantly insane people tend to be unpredictable and wild, but Seyl is still rational and calm, for the most part.

The blatantly insane types tend to also come up with flawed plans, in my experience.

I imagine, Seyl, that Viragona is using that tome as the inspiration and starting point for something bigger. Much in the same way that I collect books in game for use in RP, she's using this book to start something. The actual purpose of the book in game isn't material to the storyline. She simply saw the interesting designs inside the book and had an idea.

Oh yes Imperon, that is it exactly. I find things and they spark ideas. Not the original use most of the time, just a way to get things somehow relating to the lore and making them part of the story.

I used to have GHI and copied some of the tomes, I loved doing that, but GHI is broken and interferes with stuff.

Vira is going slightly insane now and I am thinking she needs an intervention...or someone to steal some of the runes she has already collected. Working on rune 3 at the moment.
