Our triumphs and our atrocities are always human in nature. Already it sounds like the same formula we have seen over and over again. Young adult male goes on a killing spree; I wouldn't be surprised if he showed signs of paranoid delusions. Malaysian culture has a concept known as "amok" and these events are very similar (yes, I understand amok is a bit more specific).

This was a horrible event and one that will be difficult to understand. Mental illness tends to be the case in spree/mass murder. It is really hard to predict and prevent these sort of actions because they are usually born from a fractured and seriously sick mind. I don't care about the perpetrator but I do want to understand them in order to help prevent future murders one day. Not saying I know why this person did something so disgusting but guessing based on similar actions.

My sympathies to the victims; there are few things more senseless and horrific than this.

Reports are that no one who knew the killer saw it coming; as more info is released, it becomes more confusing. I think they may find some issues with him later on, but for right now, he's an honor student who graduated with a bachelor's degree in neuroscience, and those who knew him indicated he was normal in most respects.

I personally liken it to when pro-wrestler Chris Benoit killed his wife and son a few years ago; no one really saw it coming, and he desperately loved his family. After they autopsied him (it was a murder/suicide), they discovered the head shots he'd taken from performing had functionally reduced his brain to something analogous to an 80 year-old Alzheimer's patient.

This person was planning this; the booby traps in his home, the firearms, and the planning all point to that. Something set him off, we just don't know what yet.

Did they clear his apartment yet or are they still working on it?

I believe they had it cleared; they evacuated 5 buildings to insure no one would be hurt if the traps were set off, but I haven't heard anything about them not having it cleared yet. I've only been checking the news on it sporadically through the day (I have a lot of leeway for 'net surfing at work, but it still has its limits), though, so I might be missing the most recent details.

I live in Colorado, and I'm safe, but wow this kind of thing makes me want to never want to go to the movies again... : / I do feel bad for all the people who were there.

I admitted to doing a double-take when they mentioned the school district and the high school this lunatic went to...I was a sophomore when Westview was built, and a bunch of students from both the other high schools ended up going to that one (I stayed at mine)...kinda scary. Wonder if he could gone to any of the schools I went to back then...
