Through the Eyes of a Hordie: Worgen

Truth, much like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder.

Through the Eyes of a Hordie is a series published twice per month exploring Alliance lore as, you guessed it, from the eyes of a Horde player. This is not meant to be an attack against the other faction, but rather serve as a discovery process. Perhaps even Alliance players might rediscover a bit of their lore when observing it from this side of the conflict.

Today’s subject: the newest race to join the Alliance, the Worgen.

The first time I went through the worgen area I was in the halls of Blizzcon ’10. Since you are limited to fifteen minutes of gameplay, I just tore through the quests without really paying attention to the things going on around me. So it came as a surprise to find out that the timeline from the moment you create your character to the moment you leave Gilneas isn’t really a span of hours prior to the Shattering. Instead it is a rather long time span where the quests are designed to give you a crash course in Gilnean history.

Prior to the creation of my lovely worgen priestess, Gilneas was a mystery wrapped in an enigma. If asked what the story was I could explain the basic things.

When things went south in Lordaeron, old pops decided it was time to bid Terenas farewell and close off his kingdom. Oh… and some of them were turned into werewolves by Arugal. Why you ask? I’m not entirely sure, my precious time cannot be wasted by reading quests.

Ah yes, those were the days when my one-track mind was more concerned about capping levels than actually getting immersed in the story. But back to the worgen!

Note! The character selection screen can be a bit tricky with worgen, since not only are you shaping the human form but the worgen form also. Keep in mind that they cannot be changed separately. For suggestions on names for Worgen take a look at Ellorah’s article “What’s in a name?”.

Part I: Who let the worgen out?

The second the cinematic finishes you are thrown right into the action. Prince Liam Greymane informs you Gilneas is in lockdown, and new intruders have stepped into the city. Through the next series of quest you discover that Arugal’s worgen are attacking. It is up to you to help hold back the worgen while the king and prince evacuate the people.

Alright, so you’re in a city full of flea infested worgen that will not hesitate to rip your toon’s head clean off its shoulders. The king’s army is clearly overrun and you just said you would help. What kind of trouble did you get yourself into?

But never fear. Just like any other story you get help in the form of Lord Darius Crowley. There is a slight catch to this story, however. The king explains he and Crowley aren’t exactly in the best of terms. Remember when I explained that the kingdom was closed off? Well, Darius was one of those who was opposed to this. Now through the quests alone you only learn that they didn’t see eye to eye, a little digging on Wowpedia reveals a few motifs to the disagreement. Crowley’s lands lay just outside the wall. If Greymane went through with this, Crowley’s people would be abandoned. So like any other man faced with a difficult decision, Crowley decided to take arms against his king. And just like anyone who’s ever risen against the figure of power, he was branded a traitor and tossed into jail.

So now that the small history lesson is over, Greymane gives you the not so small task of convincing Crowley to help evacuate the city. Yep, you can just picture that conversation, can’t you?

Player: Top of the evenin’ to you Crowley. Would you care for some tea and biscuits? Perhaps-even-saving-the-city-of-the-man-that-imprisoned-you? You like Earl Grey?

Lucky for us, this awesome character understands that in order to overcome this conundrum both sides will have to leave all differences aside and work together. But perhaps the most redeeming quality this character has is the fact that he can cleave with his BARE FISTS.

Now that Crowley joins the team, you tag along with his group and help round up the worgen while Greymane leads the survivors out of the city. Along with Crowley and his men you lead hordes and hordes of worgen to the cathedral where a group is already waiting to make a final stand.

Part II: Once bitten, twice shy

Yep, that small bite you got along the way? Well turns out that’s how the worgen curse is passed from Gilnean to Gilnean. After what has got to be one of the most thought provoking cinematics Blizzard has made, you awaken shackled. The same man who you helped saved is now threatening to have you destroyed. But there is still hope, for the others have not forgotten the sacrifice you and Crowley’s men made to save them.

You know that saying that goes “out of the frying pan and into the fire?” The people of Gilneas don’t seem to have a moment of peace.

Now, from the moment the two new races were revealed people have asked. ”Why not give worgen to the Horde? After all Horde are the ones with the scary looking races.”

The reason is quite simple. The forsaken have been hunting worgen down for years, using them to test all sorts of not-so-nice concoctions and expanding each time closer to Gilneas. This second part of the starting area explains that and leaves it very clear, Gilneas and Undercity don’t play nice.

The Horde part in me wants to just scoff and say “die Alliance pups.” But I can’t help feeling a surge of sympathy to the Gilnean cause. They’ve had to suffer through civil unrest, loosing their own to themselves and now they’re being attacked by the forsaken. Characters like Genn and Liam Greymane, along with Darius and Lorna Crowley, are what makes the story behind this game so appealing to me. Some have their flaws, some have made plenty of mistakes, others have shown great courage through adversity but if there’s one thing that’s common among all of them it is their quest for redemption.

Going back to the story, as you make your way through the zone you are sent on quests to hinder the advancement of the forsaken into Gilneas. But for each step you take in favor of this, the forsaken seem to take three forward. And let’s not forget there’s still feral worgen roaming about. Oh and did I mention a few strange earthquakes have been stirring things? With danger lurking around every corner you are left in charge of evacuating the small town once more.

By now my Hordish mind was asking for a rest. After all, I had just gone through months of lore to catch me up to speed. Let’s take a bit of a rest from all the lore and see how we could incorporate what we’ve already learned into forming our worgen’s background story.

The Horde player’s guide to writing a background story for a worgen (so far):

1. Your character doesn’t have to be a worgen. Many Gilneans escaped unbitten from the city. IE: Lorna Crowley.

2. Above all your character is a citizen of Gilneas. Throughout the quests you get to see that these individuals are rather proud of their country.

3. The curse is transmitted through bites.

4. Use the worgen invasion as part of your story. Its certainly a defining moment for Gilneans. But for the love of all things furry, don’t say you were the one that carried the golden key and freed Crowley from his imprisonment. Not only is that divaish, but what will your character do when s/he runs into another claiming the same?

5. Remember if your character chose to remain inside the city when the wall was erected, everything outside will be a new discovery to him/her. Depending on their age they might even remember Arthas as a kind, benevolent prince.

Oh… and their roses are gorgeous.

Until next time, keep writing!

This mini-article was originally posted over in soe4rp.wordpress.com It includes pictures from my escapades as a wee lil' worgen, so head on over if you want to check those out :)

As for the allies, I have a few questions!

Non-worgen:
  • How does your character interact with worgen?

  • What was his/her reaction the first time they crossed paths?

Worgen:
  • Is your character afflicted by the curse or do you play him/her as a regular Gilnean?

  • If un-afflicted by the curse, what's his/her interaction with those afflicted? (Not all Gilneans are supportive of their feral brethren)

Thanks a lot, Kali. Now that song is stuck in my head. >:|

I love your questions at the bottom of this post. They're definitely good to think about in your worgen creation process.

Nah - that's just no good. Without the music, these lyrics lose all their power.

If you gotta go with a "wake up in the morning" song, you gotta bring the big guns:

Wake up in the morning feeling like p diddy
Grab my glasses i'm out the door i'm gonna hit this city
Before i leave brush my teeth with a bottle of jack
'cause when i leave for the night i ain't coming back

Try getting that one out of your head now.

You're welcome.

Because there's ALWAYS a "next time"!

And before I derail this thread any further, let me say that last night was hysterical! xD My head STILL hurts from laughing so hard. Who would have thought Genna would be singing THAT song from 'See'loh Greenesun'?

*kicks thread on track*

I'm still interested in seeing some Alliance respond to the questions posed above!

You asked for it, Bells.

Non-worgen:

How does your character interact with worgen?

Sari is very open-minded and accepting. Considering she is a kaldorei mage, she knows what it's like to be feared and avoided by others. So, she tends to be more understanding and/or sympathetic of those that are different.

Also, one of her very best friends is a Gilnean who has shown great strength in her battle to live with the curse.

Again, pretty much the same answer. Sari is more curious than anything, but is too polite to blurt out "Oh my goodness! How did you become furry??!?!?" She has (a bit) more class than that.

Genny and Vivianne are both afflicted/cursed/gifted - whichever you choose to call it. Genny thinks she's cursed. Vivi tends to believe it a gift of sorts, but it's still a hassle.

Oh .. and Sari? D'aww, thank you. Genny wouldn't see it that way, but her player appreciates it!

As an educated, genteel Gilnean, Gaheris doesn't even discuss this "curse," let alone admit that he may have contracted it. These worgen, as they are, didn't merely pop up overnight; they've been lurking in the history of Gilneas for a bit (Since King Genn made the formidable error of utilizing them against the Scourge. Truly no good deed goes unpunished.) Gaheris, like most other Gilneans, knows what worgen are, knows many who are afflicted, and is wholly cognizant that those who possess two forms must walk a fine line in broader society. He doesn't especially regard afflicted Gilneans as accursed since he is intellectually capable of recognizing the usefulness of bestial ferocity in warfare, but he is highly distrustful of those who have completely given over to their feral tendencies and exist only as worgen. Why? Because Gilneans were human long before the worgen entered their midsts and to deny one's own humanity is to deny a greater part of one's ancestry. Once a Gilnean, always a Gilnean -- regardless of form.

I love this whole post. Thanks for finding the exact words for what I have been trying to come up with for some time.

Although my character is not as highly educated (yeah, let's blame the character for not thinking of this...), he largely feel the same way - without expressing it so eloquently. In polite society, you don't walk around looking like a wolf beast.

Larren is very apprehensive about his "Mr. Hyde" side, and tries hard not to be in a situation where he would be forced to reveal it.

I'm really amused by this, because Lia's reaction to Hattie revealing she was a worgen was quote:

"Oh! You are...um, furry."

>_> She's not very good with words, more than she was trying to be rude she was just making an observation. She didn't care much, was simply surprised. After all, land on a strange planet, even years later you shouldn't be too judgemental. She knows she hasn't seen everything on Azeroth, so she just kinda...goes with it and assumes its one of those things.

Hiccup is extremely observant, so though I don't recall if shes officially 'met' any worgen, she's seen them around and has deemed them closer to her kin than a normal human, but still innately human and not to be trusted with anything important really. She'll interact when forced to, but she thinks humans are rather silly.

Worgen:
Is your character afflicted by the curse or do you play him/her as a regular Gilnean?

Though I haven't found the spare change to race-change Sol, her and her twin are both affected. They're both clever and quick-witted, so they've mostly avoided notice. Yvaen is more prone to letting things slip - and dresses in a Gilnean style that would give away her roots anyhow and possibly make people more likely to suspect. When her guard is especially low, she's been known to transform at as little as a sneeze, and she's constantly afraid of that side of herself taking over. Sol on the other hand, is cocky, and believes she's got it completely under control. As her mind has slipped recently she's allowed that side of her to show more - but before that she could even fight for short amounts of time without transforming.

I guess I always just assumed that not many would want to admit to having this sort of beast inside of them - so I went with that.

It was a beautiful moment.

Nozz doesn’t trust most worgen, mainly because of the peculiarities of her living situation having an influence on her world view. That, and seeing as how many worgen she’s come across appear to have very little pride in trying to control the “beast within,” she tends to view them more as they’re willing to present themselves – as animals. Even moreso than other Alliance races >_>

She is curious about Time the worgen, though.

Jinnicky is a live and let live kind of gnome … I think she’d be willing to be friends with anything that wasn't trying to nom her face off.

As far as my worgen is concerned, she is afflicted by the curse (and as a demo lock is doubly afflicted with Metamorphosis). She is, pardon the expression, a lone wolf and doesn’t trust people in general. The way I wrote her backstory, any Gilnean who did happen to recognize her would most likely shun her.
