And people still practiced shamanism. He didn't so much ban as unleash dark magic to choke out the ancestors and silence the call. Like I said however people still tried, and did, such as Zuluhed.
Orc background help
05/07/2014 03:14 PMPosted by CanniibalClaiming any lineage with any lore character is heavily frowned upon by the general community.
Yea. I figured since he was a few generations back, and if she were from some mysterious fling, that it wouldn't really hold much water ICly any way... but the rule still applies OOCly, so I can deal with that. It was just a wild thought anyhow. :P
Thank you all for your input and clarifications! and for those awesome links! I now have all that I think I need to set up a solid backstory for my Orc'ess. I look forward to RPing with her some time :D
Thanks again! This was a huge help.
I don't see why you couldn't claim a lineage, false or not as a "bastard whelp". I don't think Blackhand was all that good a guy to stay faithful at all times. I mean, if it was someone that wasn't a villain, craven or anything of the sort than it would be more difficult, but considering how vile an orc he was (and is in WoD), it's not that difficult to think of.
Besides, the argument against is often "It'll benefit you in some way", which in this case it would do the opposite more than likely to openly claim to be a child of Blackhand.

Something I see too often is when a character claims to have had the killing blow on the Lich King or something, and people immediately start ignoring. Does no one even consider that the character may be lying ICly?
I remember making a character to experiment with this... I went into a tavern barking around, claiming I was a hero for I had just slain a Sha (this was in early MoP). After about five minutes I realized that literally every person in the tavern had ignored me. I came in on Cannibal, explained what happened, and just got a lot of "Oh"s.
Needless to say, I definitely take things IC because of this. Some Elf claims he's of royalty, I ICly ask him for evidence, he ICly shows a map of his "country", I ICly doubt that it's real... It definitely offers a better option than ignoring in my opinion.
But, uhm... Relating to the topic...
Your character could very well claim lineage to Blackhand, even though it's false, but you may run into some trouble with it.

They didn't call him "The Whacked" for nothing.
The typically grey-skinned blackrock orcs from blackrock mountain were members of the Black Tooth Grin Clan formed by Rend and Maim. They were an offshoot from the blackrock clan of before, a rift created when Orgrim Doomhammer killed Blackhand and took over the Horde. Other blackrock orcs like Varok Saurfang and Eitrigg followed Orgrim north, though the clan doesn't seem to have any identity in the New Horde.
It's also worth mentioning that the Dark Horde was all but destroyed during Cataclysm, through the Alliance questing experience. This is what lead Malkorok and many other blackrock survivors to Kalimdor, and Garrosh admitted them to his Horde, later using them to replace much of his Kor'Kron honor guard. If Malkorok had survived the siege of Orgrimaar, he would probably be sentenced as a war criminal as well. I'm not actually sure what the state of blackrock orcs in the Horde are.

Here's an update.
Having gone through a long and very difficult labor, the lowly and bitter orc mother named her daughter *Gar'mak before abandoning the babe to be raised by "the village"; which in this case is the Blackrock Clan.
This occured some eighteen to twenty years before the initial trip through the dark portal. Father unknown, her mother remained a powerful negative influence growing up; filling her head at every turn with horrible tales of how she was conceived. The whole while confusing and twisting her with lies and half truths about who she is.
At the proper young age, Gar'mak is thrust into vicious trials to sort out the weak.
Proving herself time and time again to be fearsome, fearless, vicious, and ruthless in any given situation, the young orc is made a grunt of the Old Horde. However, due to her youth and inexperience Gar'mak was only permitted to traverse the Dark Portal among the lesser warriors that followed the first and second waves into Azeroth.
Once on Azeroth she quickly made a name for herself, living up to the horrible tales often told to her by her own mother. Her reputation in battle eventually placed her among the ranks of the most vicious and bloodthirsty.
As her cruelty grew she garnered the secret attention of those necrolytes that followed the secretive Shadow Council, and her fel training began.
Still very much the novice and not "technically" a warlock at the time, she escaped Orgims wrath when he annihilated the Shadow Council along with most of its warlocks. She simply wasn't present at Gul'dan's citadel at the time.
The fel magics were too deeply ingrained in her to be forgotten. She continued to feed her addiction to the fel, furthering her dark talents in secret, diligently recalling the lessons already learned.
She eventually gained the moniker **Lak'tuk because of the way she liked to prolong the suffering of her enemies.

Gar'mak Lak'tuk survived the different skirmishes leading up to their defeat at the foot of Blackrock Mountain.
She was taken prisoner along with all the rest and was placed into one of the several camps. Upon her release, due largely to Thralls' efforts, she migrated back to the remnants of her clan finding they had joined with the Black Tooth Grin clan to form the Dark Horde of Blackrock Spire.
In these "glory days", under the rule of Rend and Maim Blackhand (and Nefarian) she excelled as a warlock. She eventually gained command of a small war party and set to aiding their invasion efforts of Redridge.
Presently
With the Dark Horde now in shambles, and in light of their massive setback in the province of Lakeshire, her small war party has morphed into a cult of dark mystics and warriors with her at their head. They remain holed up in a cave system deep within the Redridge Mountains where they do their best to remain true to the ideals of the Dark Horde.
She and her cult continually plot raids executed on Lakeshire and surrounding settlements, with the aid of their fellow Blackrock Orc and other miscellaneous allies in the region.

How does that hold up?
Interesting enough, or kinda "meh"?

Iron Horde did not become a thing until WoD. It would simply be the Horde, or if you want to be technical, the Old Horde. Otherwise, looks fine to me.
I don't see any issues. But I agree with Skullcrusha, keep in mind that the Iron Horde only exists in the alternate dimension. The Horde before the First War in our timeline is called the Old Horde to us, but to them it was simply the Horde.
Huh! I thought that they were known as the Iron Horde before they drank Mannoroth's blood. Confusion with WoD on my part, as you both said.
I corrected it in the post to say "Old Horde".
Thanks for the help everyone! :D
[Edit] I posted a short story on my forum as a kind of 'introduction'. Feel free to give it a read :)

Found this thread and just thought I'd add that Gul'dan DID in fact outlaw Shamanism when he discovered that some Warlocks were trying to reconnect with the elements and their ancestors.
Quotes from Rise of the Horde:
Quotes from Rise of the Horde:
"Durotan had no real answers for him; the decree that no one must ever again practice the shamanic arts on pain of severe punishment - or exile or death for repeated violations - had seemingly come out of nowhere."
"Why in the world, in this time of crisis and need, did Gul'dan forbid the orcs their most sacred place?"
