There are some excellent guides out there.... The various novels that feature the class types. From Arthas you read that while the belief in the Light is much like the Jedi religion, Paladins are not Jedi. and the Light is not a variation of force powers. There are tons of choices that give you insights into shamanic behavior and Night of the Dragon actually features modern day draenei.
[Guide] In-Game Roleplay -- The Basics
(Sticky)
Great post. Just a question -- what is a good RP realm? I have been stumped for awhile, I tried 3 realms and non are active.
Overall the guide is a good effort, but I'm going to put in a dissent on one part.
You don't need to be a lore professor to roleplay in this game. Not only do you not need to bone up on Wowpedia, or a like site before you make your first character, I actually strongly advised AGAINST doing so. Boning up like that tends to lead to overexpectation of what you should be pulling off and tends to open yourself to a lot of traps because of those expectations.
And it's not neccessary. The game provides you with an excellent resource in getting into the basic mindset of your character... The NPC's of the staring areas. The quests, the speeches, the dialogues are an excellent launchpoint to set mood and tone.
When I start a new character, I don't even THINK about a backstory. I frame him or her in the present tense and work more on getting a sense on where the character is today, what he or she is doing and what frame of mind. The backstory I let itself fill in piece by piece on it's own. The backstory on Drahliana didn't even start coming into being until she was level 12 and it's development was a slow process.
After you're comfortable with a character then you can plunge into the lore trivia. Don't be too hung up on what you may have gotten wrong, Not everyone in the real world after all is that right about the past or present either. :)

Here's the hard truth, RP is a minority activity on all realms even the most developed RP ones. Some have more developed communities than others but it's still pretty much an out of the way activity. Check the realm board google for related web sites. Visit the realm forums.
what is more supporting to rp horde or allaince?
good sized guide simple and short but contains a lot of help :D I once saw an RP guide in a different game A PAGE LONG!
"Health percentage indicators
At 90%
/s Hah! You call that fighting? My little sister hits harder than you!"
How would i make this into a macro that when i do hit 90% health it says this?

I think, the idea is that you just have a macro bound.
/say I AM AT 90% HEALTH NOOOOOOOOO
and hit it when you get down to 90%.
There might be a way to script a macro that auto does that at 90%, but I don't know.

On my Realm, it's Alliance. Not sure for others.

Try mine. Moon Guard is great for RP, (Open RP, at least) if you can handle avoiding Goldshire and dealing with a griefer every now and then.. (Horde do most Open RP in SMC, Alliance do most Open RP in Cathedral.)
Also, an amazing RP AddOn is Total RP.
Lets you see other players' Full Name if they entered one in their Total RP (if they have one, of course), gives States such as emotions, wounds, ect.. Lets you name Non-Combat and Hunter Pets! Lets you fill out a Personality part too, showing how Altruistic or Selfish you are, and much more!
I took a gander at this topic, and I'm going to say most stuff on here is helpful, but I fear most stuff maybe incorrect. As most are aware, I'm not well liked because I'm trying to correct the laughable rp WoW has. This isn't really true. I'm trying to correct the myths being touted as fact in role play. Like needing a character history. This is completely optional and only serves as a personal aide of keeping your character info correct.
I've repeatedly stated the RP i know for the past 6 years isn't the style used in WoW. I've been on hardcore RP MUD And various online games. Hardcore meaning you have to be in character the hole time you log on and must follow strict naming rules, description wording and the like. But one thing is a character history has always been optional.
Role playing in an RPG game or MMORPG game is very simple. All you have to do is act like a person living in this realm. You do not need and shouldn't do scripted plays, like a high school drama club. That is a basic myth on roleplaying.
Basic forms of roleplay are:
Walking instead of running
Using emotes to NPC and players. The reason for this is in role play or being in character those NPC are REAL people to your character.
Having hobbies such as fishing or hunting.
Some basic rules of Roleplaying
1 Keep IC and OOC seperate. Meaning do not judge someones IC, OOC. AkA sending a whisper saying the are roleplaying wrong. Keep incharacter and just simply say you do not believe or agree with this person and walk away, por just simply walk away.
2 Keep to the basic IN GAME lore and history. Do not go off on out of game referances such as RPG books as these tend to be stand alone. Pretty much understand what your character knows of the past, but keep up with the current goings on.
3 Your character will not know every part of history. More so if your from Gilneas. Like knowing who the death knights are and other stuff. Though a worgen death knight is sorta up in the air on this.
Thats what I learned over the course of 6 years.
All in all RP doesn't need to be a big scripted or unscripted story just act like you live in Azeroth. Lore the way i've read it, is up for personal opinion, is there a right or wrong way to understadn it. Also not all races have set codes of play, and people are free to use what ever personality they choose. And have what ever quirks they wish. And no there doesn;t need to be a big epic explination either. We are all different. So are all members of each race. There is a black sheep in every family.

Interesting post. I have been playing WoW now for close to 6 months, and have been interested in RP, but driven away from it due to the fact that back in March I started a Death Knight on a RP server (Cenarion Circle), but it wasn't any different than any other server. I have always loved RP, and still to this day play 3.5 D&D, White Wolf, Palladium, you name it. I am very interested in trying RP on an MMORPG. If anyone has a suggestion as to a good server with good people willing to help me along, please post. I also noticed that comments have begun dying out on this post, but hopefully someone will get back to me. Thank you :)
Moon Guard and Wyrmrest Accord are the big ones, the populated ones.
If you want to find RP on any other realm, chances are you need to advertise, and check out their forum board: http://us.battle.net/wow/en/forum/#forum1033927
Find the realm you want, and see what Guilds they are advertising, that will be your best bet if you don't want to try Moon Guard or Wyrmrest Accord.

07/05/2011 02:23 AMPosted by RelinquelThanks, Meep. I will give that a shot. Thanks for the forum information as well. :)
No problem, and good luck.
Do not get discouraged, there will always be RP, even if it is hard to find.
I was wondering if it was alright for players to "mix" races for their characters backstory. I dont mean like to where its like half/half but something like down the line in his/her lineage he was part something. I read a post earlier about it being unaccepted to RP as a race you werent just because you had items and to some people is was frowned upon. I was thinking for my character that somewhere in his lineage he be part Draconic, not enough to alter his appearance though he can speak Draconic (with the help of the Tongues addon) But before I start RPing with that story, I wanted to get some advice from fellow Roleplayers
Thank you, thank you, thank you soooo much for this awesome guide! I even Ctrl+C'd it onto microsoft so I could use it. It's very good, actually, let me take that back.
I don't like it.
I love it! Thank you again!

Well, it's not like you can RP Arthas' Half-Draenei, half-human son. For the most part, you'll know right away if what you play is frowned upon.
Personally, as long as you RP it well (sure, RP a Demon-hunter), I, and most of the server, won't have too much of an issue.

Thank you Shandris I really appreciate this guide! I am an experienced Roleplayer but I enjoyed reading it, and it gave me several ideas!
The Greifers really are quite annoying, they can get quite rude and obnoxious. Shandris is right!~ Don't give up! RP is NOT dying, it's just going into more hiding, so keep looking, you'll find exactly what you are looking for :3
