Also, definitely asking for this to be stickied. Hell, if I knew any of this years ago I might've had a guild. Excellently written, Imp.

There are words to avoid in your guild name. Blood, Dark, Death, Crimson...basically all those words you thought were amazingly cool when you were thirteen. Just as you are no longer thirteen, those words will no longer sound amazingly cool to other players.

I think the Crimson Blades would disagree with you.

I would also add that it is best to develop a thick skin when preparing for drama between guilds, especially on a roleplaying server like this one where we have tightly-knit guilds. You and the other leaders can often avoid this by being open in communicating intent behind storylines. While you should definitely not be afraid of your own shadow when firing up a story, you should also make sure you are not stepping on someone's toes by taking over a plot that someone else has already started and been deeply involved in. Likewise, if your toes get stepped on, be sure to communicate the issue with the other party involved.

Oh yeah, and another big one would be not trying to base your guild's existence and driven purpose on comparing it to another guild and/or being at eternal vendetta with them. Yeah, we have had classic conflicts like Pia vs. Ocheliad and Pillar vs. Modas, but those are creations of storylines, things that happen ranging from directions in military campaigns to simple bar fights. Those are interesting conflicts. Conflicts that exist because you made your guild to "take down the other guild" run the risk of existing purely to generate drama, all the more so if the other side was never asked OOCly to be involved.

I agree about Crimson Blades, they are a cool guild.

Also agree with this.

Until it's stuck to the top of the forums, we must do it manually!

One of the neatest inter-guild relationships on this server, in my opinion, is the relationship between Pia and the LO. They have such idealistic differences, and yet they act as allies just as often as they act as enemies. It takes some serious skills as RPers and as guild leaders to create something like that and to keep it going.

Excellent guide, Imperon. Kudos to you, and thank you, for taking the time to write it out. It definitely should be a sticky, and used as a resource for the RP guilds out there :)

Fantastic guide, and one I'm pointing people to - especially to point out to them that having enough people *before* getting the guild charter signed is pretty much essential.

I'm not entirely sure it's 100% essential, but it certainly saves a lot of work on the guildmaster's part as far as recruitment goes. Cenarion Circle doesn't have the population it once did, and recruitment for RP guilds can be difficult even in the best of circumstances; most RPers on the realm are already guilded, so forming new RP guilds can be a lot of work if you don't have an existing base of willing players at formation. My guild, when it was The Reclamation and before it was a full-time RP guild, had a nice base of players that I'd built largely from scratch, but when I went inactive for a couple months when TOR came out, they (logically) headed elsewhere; an active guildmaster is so very important for the early stages of a guild, particularly an RP guild: the guildmaster is the one who sets the tone of the guild's RP, and if that person isn't active and available, new members (whether accurately or not) are going to conclude the guild is "dying" already, and will head elsewhere.

Rage, an active gm is so very important to any guild unless you really have an outstanding officer base that essentially takes over the dynamics of the guild. It's difficult making a new guild, but every single guild started there. No one bought the $59.95 successful guild add on. I think that's what some people forget. Most guilds have to start from scratch.

It's just very frustrating for new guilds. They recruit five people bit by excrutiatingly slow bit. The GM has to be out of game for three days and comes back to find seven people have quit.

It takes a lot of patience and a tremendous amount of perseverance. Honestly, most new guilds don't survive, just as most new businesses don't survive, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't try.

Just develop a strong support group for the frustrating times and don't give up.

My brother and I have been mostly working on raising our guild's level at this point. It's somewhat difficult because we're the only 2 active members and there's such a large level difference between us.

What's the min number of guild members for a raid to count as a guild raid?

You need at least 8 members for it to count for a Guild raid for 10 man, 20 for 25.

I came back to WoW specifically to bump this guide!

Okay, so not really, but it really does need more sticky requests. C'mon, folks! This is an AMAZINGLY well written and poignant piece of work. Even if you never plan on running a guild you should read this, if only to understand a bit of where your GM is coming from.

Okay, it is just RIDICULOUS how informative this thread is. Can't wait to take this information and put it into action with my own guild.
