Just a small critique after reading over it.

1) I wouldn't exactly say they have arrogance that comes with age, as people said before, if racism exist within night elven society it exist within the individual, not the race, and while they may find races like gnomes quirky for their tinkering, and humans quite young, they still respect them greatly as allies.

2) Again, the death knight thing, at first all death knights were hated upon entering into each faction, Alliance and Horde, but overall the Death Knights currenty with player factions, and with the ebon blade and ashen verdict, have proven to be nothing but allies and have worked just as hard since their freedom to take down the Lich King, giving themselves a permanent place into the factions, with maybe only civilians fearing them for what they are, not heroes ( Which the players technically are) not fearing them, finding them as allies needed in this time.

3) The gender status, Night Elves don't seem to follow the typical pattern of one stays home one goes off to fight. Both genders in night elven society seem quite high on equality, and any roles tend to be filled by either gender. And the males when warriors or the such, were just as likely to be freelance or working with the circle as females were, during the war of the ancients it was males actually leading the army as a whole, with males and females fighting side by side, though I don't believe males are generally accepted into the sentinels, that is one of the few fragments of the night elven military. Though up until recently it was mostly males as druids ( Shown by the claw and talon we witnessed in warcraft three ) and mostly women in the role of a priestess, not a single male I can remember during any story was a priest back in the times, please correct me if you know of some, so many class/gender combos are recent things ( Decade wise ). But most roles aside from those two up until recently were equally head by both genders.

Just my two cents, roleplayed a night elf warrior for 4 1/2 years before switching to this guy

Edit: As a small throw in, please feel free to flame, I take this down from every single book I've read (Which is every one except for the shattering), all the hours on wowwiki, and generally paying attention to things in game about them. ( Night elves having my favorite lore along with trolls and dwarves )

male night elves, apparently work out like hell to get these nicely toned thighs and quads, only to use them for cooking and picking up the kids from school.

This is an absolutely refreshing post. I want to see this stickied, and a post like this for each race.

Find it odd they say few males take up the roll of warriors or hunters seeing as in the war of the ancients many of them were fighting the demons, their lore simply does not stop clashing with the rest, of course that's also what happens when you have different writers doing the stuff.

Of course, we're also in Warcrafts "Modern" times, the things we read about has mostly come to an end, I see far more female druids than males, far more male warriors than females.

A revolution is happening, we can't quite roleplay the race anymore as they are in the books and guides 100%, some things must change it seems.

After reading Nicholas' post, I did some digging for some information about gender roles when it comes to the family.

Unlike other races, night elf families are loose-knit and tribal despite their civilization. As one put it, to them, your birth family is not as important as the family you adopt yourself. Translation: It doesn’t matter who your parents are, but it does matter who you keep around you. Entire communities raise their children together, forming long and lasting bonds, until everyone is related in spirit to everyone else. Night elves do not traditionally marry, but they do take companions for life. Socially, night elves combine what humans see as traditional matriarchal and patriarchal elements. Traditional belief has it that that the duties of a druid are a man’s job, while women casters are much better suited as priestesses. Women are also the warriors of their race, and few men participate directly as warriors and hunters. Those few men who actively engage in battle are either the fierce druids of the claw, or the enigmatic and misunderstood demon hunters. While this trend has been changing recently, most night elves hold to tradition, as it’s all they had for thousands of years.

I honestly thought you were a troll when I looked at your avatar the first time. Voodoo mask, long ears, very light blue/purple skin... All of the signs were there.

I'm going to bump this thread.

And it's Magwin, along with her father Cowlen on Silvermyst Isle. I don't see the evidence of her talking about her family as solid proof Night Elves live in nuclear families such as ourselves when it's literally two NPCs that only mention their family compared to the RPG.

Elves raising children as a community doesn't eliminate parents, siblings, grandparents, aun'ts and uncles, and cousins. It just means elves all pitch in to help their community from its very core unlike humans.

It takes a village to raise a child. I'd assume they do it literally as such.

I must say that this guide is pretty in-depth. I've beenb playing most of my NElves like this anyway, but a few points must be made. The largest pertains to Mages and Death Knights.

Death Knights

While, yes, they would be seen as reminders of unnatural circumstances and times, they would have proven themselves by this point. Some even being revered, despite their circumstance in life. This would be case by case of course, but universally shunned is a bit of a stretch. Pity may enter the equation perhaps more accurately.

Mages

Highborne. Yes, they are back from Eldre'thalas. And they would be seen as the masters of the arcane, moreso than High Elves, moreso than Blood Elves. Draenei would have them beat solely. Each Night Elf mage either comes from Highborne stock, ideally, or trekked from Eldre'thalas, even more ideal.

Overall, the guide is quite good, but we all could find a few knit-picks in any guide, I suppose.

Ya know, over all I really enjoyed this thread. There's some things I disagree with (but it's such minor stuff that it's not worth arguing about) as with everything but all in all it's spot on accurate to the way Night Elf culture is like.

Night Elves are definitely my favorite race lore wise so I appreciate someone putting together something I'm too lazy to do myself.

Night Elves are xenophobic and nature worshipping. The fact that Death Knights are both 'new' and corrupted would instantly earn them hate and distrust from the majority of the Night Elf population.

Even after Northrend -humans- (the race most likely to accept Death Knights in the Alliance) still speak of Thassarian poorly and distrust Death Knights in general.

Mages

In Azshara for the Horde there is a specific reference by a Blood Elf magister detailing how poorly the Highborne mages practice magic. He openly exploits this weakness to kill every single one of them.


The Blood Elves had the advantage of living in a society that glorified magic and built an entire kindom upon it. They've been allies with Dalaran. For 10,000 years they've been able to practice magic with the best of resources.

The Highborne have spent the last 10,000 years in a hovel of a city, under the rule of a crazed leader, sacrificing their own to keep their magical battery up and running. They had nowhere near the resources or growth the Blood Elves did. Also remember, the Blood Elves -were- Highborne originally.
